Pokhara: the City of Multiculture

            Pokhara is mainly the city of cultural diversity. Though it’s smaller in terms of area, there are followers of many religions including Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism etc. residing within this city. Most of the markets of Pokhara are decorated by Buddha monasteries, Hindu temples, Christian churches, Islam mosques etc. There is also unity in religious, cultural diversity. There are different kinds of rituals for birth, marriage, death in every religion, caste and community, which can be observed in this city.

            Pokhara is rich with language and culture of dozens of castes including Newar, Gurung, Brahmin, Chhetri, Magar, Thakali, Bhote and Tamang. Pokhara is also a rich city by folk tune, folk music, folk dance and folk literature etc.

            Pokhara is the leading city in terms of religious processions and particular occasions. Dance of Twelve Bhairav (fierce forms of Shiva), Baghjatra (festival of tiger), Tayamacha dance, Lakhe (demon), Tohote, Balan (chorus with character portrayal of gods), Lhosar (Himalayan New Year), Account of Krishna’s life, Ratyauli (show performed by women at bridegroom’s house after he is sent off to bride’s house in wedding ceremony) dance etc. having quite mythological and original history and significance are also the specialities of Pokhara. Dances having varieties of tune, rhythm and customs of different castes are other characteristic of Pokhara.

            There is a practice of celebrating festivals such as 15th of Asar (end of June) transplanting paddy seedlings, 1st of Magh (mid-Jan) eating ghee, molasses, sweet potato, arum etc., occasion of eating Yamari (small jar like bread), Teej (festival celebrated by women in worship of lord Shiva and Parvati to ensure the prosperity of family life), Shivaratri (festival in honour of Shiva), Full moon of Baisakh (Apr/May), New Year, Buddha’s anniversary, Krishna’s birthday, Festival of Nine Durga (manifestation of Shakti – power), Tenth day of Dashain (festival in honour of goddess Durga) and Deepavali (festival in honour of Laxmi – goddess of wealth) with specialenthusiasm in Pokhara.

               पोखरा, मुलत : साँस्कृतिक विविधताको सहर हो । क्षेत्रफलको हिसावले सानो सहर भएतापनि यस सहर भित्र हिन्दु, मुसलमान, इसाइ, बौद्ध लगायत अन्य धेरै धर्मका अनुयायीहरु बसोबास गर्दछन् । बौद्धगुम्बा, हिन्दुमन्दिर, इसाइ चर्च, मुस्लीम मस्जीद आदिले पोखराका अघिकांश बजार सिँगारिएको छ । धार्मिक, साँस्कृतिक अनेकता भित्र पनि एकता रहेको छ । हरेक धर्म, जात, सम्प्रदाय भित्र जन्म, विवाह, मृत्यु सँस्कार अलग अलग छन् जुन यस सहरमा हेर्न पाइन्छ ।
नेवार, गुरुङ्ग, ब्राह्मण, क्षेत्री, मगर, थकाली, भोटे, तामाङ्ग लगायतका दर्जनौँ जातजातिका भाषा सँस्कृतिले पोखरा सम्पन्न रहेको छ । पोखरा लोकभाखा, लोक संगीत, लोकनृत्य, लोक साहित्य आदिले पनि सम्पन्न सहर हो ।
जात्रा पर्वहरुका लागि त पोखरा अग्रस्थानमै रहेको सहर हो । अत्यन्त पौराणिक एवम् मौलिक इतिहाँस र महत्व बोकेको बाह्रभैरवको नृत्य, बाघजात्रा, जाईजात्रा, तायामचा नृत्य, लाखे, ट्होटे, वालन, ल्होसार, कृष्णचरित्र, रत्यौलिनृत्य आदि पोखराका विशेषता रहेका छन् । थरिथरि जातका थरिथरि भाखा, लय र भेषभूषा भएको नृत्यहरु पनि पोखराको अर्को विशेषता रहेको छ ।
धान रोपाई गर्ने असारे पन्ध्र ध्यू, चाकु, सखरखण्ड, पिडालु खाने माघे सक्रान्तिको जात्रा, यमरी (भूड्के रोटी) खाने पर्व, तीज, शिवरात्री, बैशाख पूर्णिमा, नयाँवर्ष, बुद्ध जयन्ती, कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी, नवदूर्गा महोत्सव, विजयदशमी, दिपावली जस्ता पर्वहरु लाई पोखरामा विशेष उत्साहका साथ मनाउने प्रचलन रहेको छ ।
